When planning a perfect summer getaway, look no further than Shores & Islands in Ohio. This unexpected destination along the shores of Lake Erie offers charming waterfront towns, island adventures, and endless ways to enjoy the lake.
From climbing the iconic Marblehead Lighthouse and strolling through the quaint streets of Lakeside Chautauqua to sipping Pink Catawba and ending your day with a Lake Erie sunset, this destination feels like summer encapsulated.
Add in ferry rides to Put-in-Bay and Kelleys Island, where you can explore by golf cart, and you’ll quickly discover why this region is one of Ohio’s best getaways.
Before visiting, I only associated this part of Ohio with Cedar Point (which is a great addition to this itinerary for thrill-seekers), but I had no idea it was also home to charming lakeside towns, beautiful islands, wineries, and some of the most relaxing waterfront scenery I’ve experienced. It honestly feels like one of Ohio’s best-kept summer secrets.
Keep reading for my exact four-day Shores & Islands itinerary, including where to stay, the best things to do, and can’t-miss experiences to help you plan the perfect Lake Erie Shores & Islands getaway.
This blog post is sponsored by Shores & Islands Ohio. However, my opinions are, as always, my own.
About Shores & Islands, Ohio
Stretching along the shores of Lake Erie in northern Ohio, Lake Erie Shores & Islands is home to charming waterfront towns, ferry-accessible islands, local wineries, beaches, and historic landmarks.
While there is much more to discover, this four-day itinerary focuses on the heart of the region, exploring Marblehead, Catawba Island, Put-in-Bay, and Kelleys Island.
Where to Stay in Lake Erie Shores & Islands
For this Lake Erie Shores & Islands itinerary, I recommend basing yourself in either Marblehead or Catawba Island. Staying here makes it easy to explore the mainland on your arrival and departure days, and to take day trips by ferry to Put-in-Bay and Kelleys Island.
For this Lake Erie Shores & Islands itinerary, you’ll spend less time driving and more time enjoying everything the region has to offer.
The Wave at Marblehead
When planning a Lake Erie getaway, where you stay is part of the experience, and The Wave at Marblehead is the perfect boutique lakeside retreat. With its modern coastal design, waterfront views, and ideal location, I couldn’t think of a better place to stay.
I loved returning to the pool for a swim after a day of exploring, enjoying happy-hour cocktails overlooking Lake Erie, and riding one of the complimentary bicycles to nearby Marblehead Lighthouse.
4-Day Lake Erie Shores & Islands Itinerary
If you’re looking for a fun-filled yet equally relaxing getaway, this 4-day Shores & Islands itinerary is for you.
Before my trip, I knew this region would be picturesque, but I wasn’t prepared for just how much fun it would be. From peaceful sunsets over Lake Erie and leisurely afternoons at local wineries to thrilling golf cart rides around Put-in-Bay and Kelleys Island, every day offered a new adventure.
It’s the kind of destination that doesn’t just make for beautiful photos, it creates memories that’ll last a lifetime.
Day 1: Marblehead & Catawba Island
Welcome to Lake Erie Shores and Islands! Today is all about settling into the region and slipping into vacation mode. Spend the afternoon visiting one of the most–photographed landmarks on Lake Erie, relaxing at your lakeside hotel, and unwinding with a beautiful sunset.
Marblehead Lighthouse
Upon arrival, head straight to Marblehead Lighthouse, the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes.
Take some time to admire this iconic landmark and be sure to snap plenty of photos. It’s one of the most photographed spots along Lake Erie, and it’s easy to see why. Perched atop a rocky limestone shoreline, the lighthouse creates a picture-perfect backdrop.
Be sure to walk the grounds and, if it’s open during your visit, climb to the top for panoramic views of Lake Erie. From the observation deck, you’ll be able to spot the surrounding islands and even the roller coasters of Cedar Point on a clear day.
Check into The Wave at Marblehead
Check into your lakeside retreat at The Wave at Marblehead. This boutique hotel is the perfect place to unwind, with its modern coastal design, stunning Lake Erie views, and convenient location near many of the region’s top attractions.
The amenities are what truly set this property apart. Whether you’re cooling off with a swim after a day of exploring, sipping cocktails during happy hour overlooking the lake, or taking one of the complimentary bikes for a ride to nearby Marblehead Lighthouse, The Wave will elevate your trip to Shores & Islands.
Dinner at The Orchard Farm Stand
One of Catawba Island’s more popular gathering spots, The Orchard’s eateries are a must-add to your itinerary. The property includes Bar & Table, Farm Stand, and The Coop. With outdoor seating, live music, and the beautiful orchard backdrop, this is the perfect spot to grab a bite to eat.
I opted for their popular Hot Honey and Double Pepperoni Pizza, paired with a crisp, delightfully punchy Orchard Hazy Hot Peach IPA. (Tip: Happy Hour runs Monday through Friday from 4–6 p.m., and pizzas are just $15.)
Before you leave, be sure to stop by The Coop, tucked behind the Farm Stand. This whimsical outdoor cocktail bar is the perfect place to enjoy a drink in a truly Instagrammable setting. Even if you don’t get a cocktail, it’s worth checking out the seasonal decor and seeing the chickens.
Sunset Along Lake Erie
The perfect way to end your first day is by watching the sunset over Lake Erie. While there are plenty of beautiful places throughout the region to catch the sunset, my favorite spot was East Harbor State Park.
With its sandy beach and unobstructed views across the lake, it’s an idyllic place to spend a relaxing evening. You’ll find plenty of people gathering here to watch the sunset, but the beach is spacious enough that it never feels crowded, making it easy to find your own peaceful place along the shore.
Day 2: Put-in-Bay
Today you’ll hop aboard the ferry to Put-in-Bay, the lively village on South Bass Island. While Put-in-Bay is known for its energetic atmosphere, I was surprised by just how beautiful the island is, with scenic shorelines, peaceful parks, and incredible views of Lake Erie around every turn.
Miller Ferry to Put-in-Bay
Get an early start to the day and board the Miller Ferry to Put-in-Bay. There is so much to see on South Bass Island that you’ll want to make the most of your time. The ferry operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so I recommend arriving early, especially on summer weekends.
Once aboard, sit back, relax, and enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Erie and the surrounding islands. The ride itself is part of the experience and a fun and scenic adventure.
The Miller Ferry transports both passengers and vehicles, and it was fascinating to watch the cars drive onto the ferry before we set off.
Rent a Golf Cart
Upon arriving on the island, take the short walk to E’s Put-in-Bay Golf Carts to pick up your rental.
A golf cart is by far the best way to explore Put-in-Bay and is how most visitors get around the island. Not only is it convenient, but it’s also part of the experience. Cruising along the island’s scenic roads with the lake never far from view was one of my favorite parts of the day.
While many visitors head straight to downtown, I recommend heading in the opposite direction to explore the quieter side of the island first. I made a quick stop at Noddi’s Java Dockside for a coffee overlooking the ferry harbor before setting off to explore Put-in-Bay.
South Bass Island State Park
South Bass Island State Park is one of the most picturesque spots on the island and a must-visit during your day in Put-in-Bay.
With its striking limestone shoreline and crystal-clear water, this beach feels far removed from what most people imagine when they think of Ohio. Even though I grew up on the Great Lakes, I had no idea Lake Erie was home to beaches like this.
Whether you stop to admire the boats dotting the harbor, snap a photo with the Put-in-Bay sign, skip rocks along the shoreline, or simply soak in the view, South Bass Island State Park is well worth adding to your itinerary.
Heineman Winery & Crystal Cave
This is by far one of the most unique wineries I’ve ever visited! Heineman Winery & Crystal Cave combines award-winning local wine with one of the island’s most fascinating natural attractions.
Established in 1888, Heineman Winery is Ohio’s oldest family-owned and operated winery. It’s an essential stop along the Lake Erie Shores & Islands Wine Trail, offering a wide selection of locally produced wines. I opted for a glass of the Island Chablis, which was light, fruity, and the perfect sip for a summer afternoon in the Wine Garden.
While you’re here, don’t miss a tour of Crystal Cave. Located beneath the winery, it’s home to the world’s largest geode, with walls covered in shimmering sky-blue celestite crystals. Photos simply don’t do this place justice!
Following the tour of Crystal Cave, there is a guided winery tour, which is a great way to learn about this historic winery.
Explore Put-in-Bay’s Scenic Side
One of my favorite parts of visiting Put-in-Bay was exploring some of the island’s quieter, more scenic spots. Since the island is relatively small, you can easily cover a lot of ground in one day with your golf cart.
Make a few quick stops at scenic overlooks like Captain Alfred Parker Park and Oak Point State Park, where you’ll find beautiful views of Lake Erie and boats dotting the harbor.
My favorite stops, however, were Scheeff East Point Nature Preserve and Massie Cliffside Preserve. Scheeff East Point features a short trail lined with seasonal wildflowers that leads to a peaceful stretch of shoreline, while Massie Cliffside Preserve offers a unique limestone landscape and dramatic lake views.
Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial
One of the most recognizable landmarks in Put-in-Bay, Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial is the tallest Doric column in the world. Built to commemorate the Battle of Lake Erie and the lasting peace between the United States, Canada, and Great Britain, it’s an important piece of the island’s history.
I knew the monument would be impressive, but I wasn’t prepared for just how massive it is. Seeing it up close really puts its incredible scale into perspective.
Note: During my visit, the observation deck was closed for renovations. It will be closed for the duration of the 2026 season while it undergoes renovations.
Explore Downtown Put-in-Bay
No visit to South Bass Island is complete without spending time in downtown Put-in-Bay. Filled with waterfront restaurants, local shops, lively bars, and plenty of golf carts cruising the streets, it’s the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring.
I loved wandering through the shops and soaking up the island’s fun, energetic atmosphere. For dinner, I grabbed a casual bite at Dairy Isle, a local favorite known for its burgers, fries, and ice cream. If you’re looking for a sit-down meal, The Boathouse Bar & Grill is another popular choice.
Before catching the ferry back to the mainland, I ended the day with a frozen drink at The Keys. With its Key West-inspired theme, dockside setting, and tropical atmosphere, it was the perfect way to wrap up the day on Put-in-Bay.
Day 3: Kelleys Island
Spend the day exploring the quieter side of Lake Erie Shores & Islands on Kelleys Island. Think scenic golf cart rides, endless Lake Erie views, fascinating geological landmarks, local wine, and a relaxing afternoon at Kelleys Island State Park.
Kelleys Island Ferry
Another day in beautiful Lake Erie Shores & Islands, another ferry ride! Today, you’re boarding the Kelleys Island Ferry for a scenic trip across Lake Erie.
The approximately 30-minute ride is perfect for relaxing and enjoying the beautiful lake views before another island adventure. On a clear day, you can even spot the roller coasters of Cedar Point rising above the shoreline in the distance.
Once you arrive on Kelleys Island, it’s about a 15-minute walk to the downtown area. En route, you’ll pass beautiful lakefront homes and Inscription Rock, one of the island’s most significant historic landmarks, featuring ancient Native American petroglyphs.
Explore Downtown Kelleys Island
Spend some time wandering the island’s charming village center, where you’ll find local shops, cafés, and beautiful waterfront views.
Kelleys Island Coffee Company is an absolute must to start your day. This café serves delicious coffee and fresh pastries, making it the perfect place to fuel up before exploring the island.
Afterward, spend some time browsing the local shops. I especially enjoyed stopping by The Village Peddler and Kelleys Island General Store, both of which have a great selection of clothing, gifts, and island souvenirs.
Rent a Golf Cart
Pick up your golf cart rental from Caddy Shack Square Golf Carts, conveniently located in the village center.
Just like on Put-in-Bay, one of the best ways to explore Kelleys Island is by golf cart. If you’d prefer a more active adventure, Caddy Shack also offers bike rentals. At just 4.5 square miles, the island is easy to explore at your own pace.
As you make your way to the next stop, take the scenic route along West Lakeshore Drive. With beautiful views of Lake Erie around every bend, the drive is an experience in itself.
Glacial Grooves Geological Preserve
Glacial Grooves Geological Preserve is one of the most fascinating stops on this itinerary. Reading about this geological phenomenon before my trip didn’t prepare me for just how massive and intricate it is in person.
Carved into limestone by glaciers more than 18,000 years ago, these grooves are among the largest and best-preserved examples in the world. Walking along the boardwalk gives you an up-close look at their incredible scale and the power of the glaciers that once shaped the island.
Even if you’re not a geology buff, this is one of those places that’s well worth a quick stop. Seeing the grooves up close is something you simply can’t appreciate from photos alone.
Lunch & Wine Tasting at Kelley’s Island Wine Co.
Kelley’s Island Wine Co. is a fantastic stop! Here you can sample a diverse selection of Lake Erie wines in their fun farm setting.
I recommend getting one of their pre-selected tasting flights to bring to the garden. Here you can sit, relax, play yard games, and even visit animals at the barn.
When hunger strikes, you have a couple of great options. You can grab a bite from Kelleys Island Wine Co. or head next door to KI Cantina for Mexican food. I opted for KI Cantina, and the food was delicious! I only wish I’d had more time to stay for one of their margaritas (they have a fantastic cocktail menu).
Charles Herndon Gallery and Sculpture Garden
For something a little different, stop by the Charles Herndon Gallery and Sculpture Garden. Set on a beautiful 10-acre property overlooking Lake Erie, the sculpture garden showcases dozens of works created by artist Charles Herndon throughout his career.
I loved wandering the peaceful grounds and discovering the sculptures tucked throughout the landscape. With beautiful lake views and plenty of space to explore, it’s a hidden gem that’s well worth a stop on Kelleys Island.
While the sculpture garden is open from dawn to dusk, try to visit when the gallery is open as well. Inside, you’ll find even more of Herndon’s paintings and sculptures.
Kelleys Island State Park
Carve out a good portion of your day to explore Kelleys Island State Park. Between the beautiful limestone shoreline, scenic hiking trails, and peaceful lake views, it’s easy to spend a couple of hours here.
The North Shore Loop is the park’s most popular hike, taking visitors through the island’s unique landscape to the Alvar Viewing Area. Since I was short on time, I opted for the easy 0.2-mile Carla’s Trail instead. This short trail led to the Alvar, a rare limestone landscape unique to the Great Lakes region, and a secluded limestone beach, where I spent some time soaking in the peaceful scenery.
After your hike, head over to Kelleys Island State Park Beach, where you can relax on the sandy shore and take a dip in Lake Erie. It’s the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the island’s peaceful atmosphere.
Dinner at The Village Pump
After dropping off your golf cart, head over to The Village Pump, an island staple serving visitors and boaters since the 1980s.
The restaurant is best known for its Lake Erie perch and the famous Brandy Alexander, often described as an adult milkshake. But the extensive menu offers something for everyone. If you’re a seafood lover, I highly recommend ordering one of their specialties, whether it’s the Fried Shrimp, Walleye Bites, or Richie’s Famous Lobster Chowder.
The Village Pump has a fun, laid-back atmosphere that’s perfect for lingering over dinner and a Brandy Alexander. I decided to soak in every last bit of island time by taking my meal to go and enjoying it at the picnic tables overlooking the marina, located just across the street from The Village Pump.
Day 4: Marblehead & Lakeside Chautauqua
It’s the final day of your Lake Erie Shores & Islands itinerary. Before checking out of The Wave at Marblehead, be sure to take advantage of the hotel’s amenities one last time. Whether you relax by the pool, enjoy a coffee overlooking Lake Erie, or take one final walk along the waterfront, it’s the perfect way to end your stay.
Breakfast at Root to Rise Wellness Café
For a delicious and nutritious breakfast, Root to Rise Wellness Café is the place to go! They have an array of offerings, including protein-packed smoothies, fresh juices, elevated avocado toast, and handcrafted coffees.
I ordered the avocado toast paired with a honey cinnamon iced latte, and it was the perfect way to fuel up before one last morning of exploring.
Explore Lakeside Chautauqua
Spend your final afternoon soaking in the charm of Lakeside Chautauqua, a picturesque private lakeside community on the shores of Lake Erie.
Visitors can obtain a complimentary two-hour shopping and dining pass, which allows you plenty of time to explore. After picking up your pass, wander the idyllic streets, browse the local shops, and stop by Coffee & Cream for a mid-afternoon coffee or sweet treat.
Before leaving, make your way to the Lakeside Pavilion to take in the beautiful boardwalk, beach, and waterfront park. One of my favorite parts was strolling along the lakeshore, where colorful wildflowers line the path and stunning lakefront cottages overlook the water.
Pink Catawba at Rocky Point Winery
End your trip with one more sip along the Lake Erie Shores & Islands Wine Trail. Rocky Point Winery in Marblehead is a fantastic winery to add to your itinerary.
The pavilion and outdoor patio are absolutely gorgeous and the perfect place to linger while sampling some of the region’s Lake Erie wines.
No visit to the Lake Erie Shores & Islands Wine Trail feels complete without trying Pink Catawba. This refreshing, slightly sweet wine has become a regional favorite and is the perfect way to end your trip.
Shores & Islands Itinerary: Wrap-up
This wraps up my four-day Lake Erie Shores & Islands itinerary. While there are countless ways to experience this beautiful region, if you’re looking for an iconic summer getaway, I couldn’t recommend this itinerary more.
From climbing Marblehead Lighthouse and sipping Pink Catawba to cruising around Put-in-Bay and unwinding on Kelleys Island, this trip felt like the perfect summer escape.
