Chautauqua County has been a beloved summer retreat for more than 150 years. Since the heyday of Chautauqua Institution, when politicians, artists, writers, and scientists gathered here each summer, visitors have been coming to experience the area’s unique blend of culture and natural beauty.
While Chautauqua Institution may be the county’s best-known summer attraction, I quickly realized there’s so much more to discover.
Living in Buffalo, New York, and having friends who live in the region, I’ve had the pleasure of spending relaxing days on Chautauqua Lake and laughing my way through the National Comedy Center. This latest trip allowed me to explore even more of the county, from Lake Erie wineries and scenic waterfronts to outdoor adventures, charming lakeside towns, and historic landmarks.
Whether you’re looking to unwind on the water, sip local wines, hike through unique rock formations, or immerse yourself in history, Chautauqua County is one of Western New York’s best summer getaways.
Why Visit Chautauqua County
Chautauqua County is the westernmost county in New York State and is home to two distinct bodies of water: Lake Erie and Chautauqua Lake. Together, they create a destination filled with charming lakeside towns, waterfront stays, and endless outdoor activities.
While Chautauqua County is a true year-round destination, summer is an especially wonderful time to visit.
Whether you’re taking in lake views, exploring scenic hiking trails, sipping local wines, or wandering the historic grounds of Chautauqua Institution, there’s no shortage of ways to experience the region.
Where to Stay in Chautauqua County
For this summer getaway to Chautauqua County, I recommend booking a lakeside stay on Chautauqua Lake. While this region offers some incredible properties away from the lake, there’s nothing like leisurely mornings taking in the lake views from your balcony and evening unwinding with a Chautauqua Lake sunset.
Chautauqua Harbor Hotel
The Chautauqua Harbor Hotel is such an idyllic place to stay. This sprawling waterfront property in Celoron feels like a resort more than a traditional hotel.
From swimming in the outdoor pool, sipping on cocktails at the Carousel Bar, listening to live music, or taking a sunset stroll along the lakefront promenade, every moment of your stay at the Harbor Hotel allows you to soak in the views of Chautauqua Lake.
I highly recommend booking one of the Lake View rooms. Starting the morning with a cup of coffee on my private balcony was one of the highlights of my stay.

This three-day Chautauqua County itinerary is all about savoring the outdoors, from the shores of Lake Erie and Chautauqua Lake to scenic woodlands filled with unique hiking trails and unforgettable experiences.
Paired with local wineries, charming waterfront communities, historic attractions, and an idyllic lakeside stay, it creates the perfect well-rounded summer getaway.
Day 1: Lake Erie & Wine Country
The first day of this Chautauqua itinerary is the perfect introduction to the region. You’ll begin along the sandy shores of Lake Erie and end the day watching the sunset over Chautauqua Lake. In between, you’ll sip local wines in Lake Erie Wine Country and explore two charming small towns.
Relax at Sunset Bay Beach & Enjoy Lunch at Cabana Sam’s
Often dubbed one of the best beaches on Lake Erie, Sunset Bay Beach is a beautiful stretch of sandy shoreline lined with beach houses, restaurants, and waterfront bars. Sand spills onto the surrounding streets, adding to the area’s laid-back beach town charm.
Before lunch, take a stroll along the beach or walk out onto the breakwall for sweeping views of Lake Erie. If you have extra time, spread out a beach blanket and relax on the soft sand before continuing your day.
For lunch, head to Cabana Sam’s, a beachfront restaurant serving seafood, casual American fare, and refreshing frozen cocktails. With expansive views of Lake Erie and a vibrant, beachy atmosphere, it feels like a slice of Florida tucked away in Western New York.
I opted for the Buffalo chicken wrap, which was light yet packed with flavor. To fully embrace the vacation vibes, order one of the restaurant’s signature frozen drinks. I especially recommend the Sangria Slush, made with wine from nearby Merritt Estate Winery.
Sip Local Wines Along Lake Erie Wine Country
As the largest grape-growing region east of the Rocky Mountains, Lake Erie Wine Country has no shortage of wineries to explore. With a packed itinerary, however, I recommend choosing one standout stop to experience the region’s winemaking.
Liberty Vineyards & Winery was the perfect choice. Order a wine flight and enjoy it beneath the pavilion or at one of the outdoor tables overlooking the vineyards.
The winery offers an excellent variety of wines, so there’s something to suit every palate. While you’re here, don’t miss the opportunity to try Fredonia, a grape variety developed in Western New York. This semi-sweet red is served chilled, making it the perfect wine to sip on a hot summer day.
Explore the Dunkirk Boardwalk & Lighthouse
Spend the late afternoon discovering Dunkirk, a charming port city on the shores of Lake Erie.
Start with a stroll along the Dunkirk Pier, a popular spot for fishing and taking in panoramic views of the harbor and Lake Erie. If you have a little extra time, stop by 64 on the Pier, a lively bar overlooking the marina that’s perfect for a drink with a view.
From there, wander over to the Dunkirk Boardwalk, where you’ll find local gift shops, a café, an ice cream shop, and several restaurants. It’s a fun place to browse before continuing to the city’s lighthouse.
Visiting the Dunkirk Lighthouse is a must. Take some time to stroll the grounds of this historic and still operational lighthouse while enjoying beautiful views of Lake Erie. It’s one of the area’s most recognizable landmarks and makes a great photo stop.
If you have more time, you can also join a guided tour to explore the keeper’s quarters, browse the maritime museum, and climb the 61-foot lighthouse tower. Tours are thorough and typically last 1 to 1.5 hours, so I’d recommend planning for the extra time if you’d like the full experience.
Stroll Through Historic Fredonia & Dine at The White Inn
Downtown Fredonia is a charming college town with tree-lined streets, locally owned shops, and beautiful historic architecture. During the summer months, the pace slows, making it the perfect place for a leisurely evening stroll.
Spend some time exploring Barker Commons, the village’s picturesque central square, where you’ll find a classic white gazebo and intricate fountains. It’s the perfect spot to relax before (or after) dinner.
Then head to The White Inn, a beautifully restored historic hotel that has welcomed guests since 1868. Dine on the elegant white front porch or inside the historic inn.
I paired my meal with a glass of 21 Brix Ella’s White, a delightfully sweet wine from a local winery. To start, I highly recommend the fried zucchini; it practically melted in my mouth. For the main course, The White Inn’s Lamplight Chicken was equally delicious.
Check into Chautauqua Harbor Hotel & Watch the Sunset
Make your way to Celoron and check into the Chautauqua Harbor Hotel, your home for the next two nights. This beautiful waterfront property on the shores of Chautauqua Lake is the perfect base for exploring the region.
I arrived about an hour before sunset, which gave me plenty of time to settle into my beautiful Lake View Room before heading outside to enjoy the hotel grounds during golden hour.
Take a stroll along the lakefront promenade to the Celoron Lighthouse. Whether you’re photographing the lighthouse against the golden sky or simply soaking in the sunset from the hotel grounds, watching the sun dip below the horizon over Chautauqua Lake is the perfect way to end your first day.
Day 2: Outdoor Adventures & Bemus Point
From soaring through the treetops at Peek’n Peak Resort and hiking among the towering rock formations of Panama Rocks Scenic Park to relaxing along the shores of Chautauqua Lake in Bemus Point, this day showcases some of Chautauqua County’s most memorable summer experiences.
Experience Peek’n Peak Resort
Wake up bright and early for breakfast at Chautauqua Harbor Hotel before heading to Peek’n Peak Resort for a morning and afternoon filled with adventure and relaxation.
Start at Peek’n Peak Mountain Adventures, where guests are harnessed in before making their way through eight aerial courses featuring 69 obstacles. The courses vary in difficulty, but even the easier levels offer plenty of excitement.
Walking across tightropes, climbing over suspended obstacles, and moving through the treetops made this experience especially memorable. While parts of the course were challenging, I also found it surprisingly tranquil to be surrounded by the trees.
For lunch, head to Woods N Wedges, a casual eatery overlooking the resort’s Upper Golf Course. After such a high-adrenaline morning, I was happy to refuel with a freshly made wrap while taking in the rolling hills stretching across the course. It’s the perfect place to slow down before the afternoon.
End your time at Peek’n Peak Resort by unwinding at The Spa at the Peak or relaxing at one of the resort’s beautiful pools. I opted for a facial, which was the perfect way to recharge after the ropes course. I left feeling completely refreshed, with my skin glowing and hydrated.
Hike Through the Rock Formations at Panama Rocks
Next on the agenda is Panama Rocks Scenic Park, one of the most unique natural attractions in Chautauqua County.
The park features a 1-mile loop trail that winds through towering, moss-covered rock formations. While the trail itself isn’t very long, be sure to venture off the main path to get a closer look at the narrow passageways between the rocks, some rising as high as 60 feet.
Beyond the stunning scenery, Panama Rocks is simply fun to explore. Climb over boulders, squeeze through narrow crevices, and discover hidden caves tucked within the ancient rock formations.
One thing I especially appreciated was the interpretive signage placed throughout the trail, highlighting different points of interest along the way. I found myself venturing off at nearly every stop to admire the especially picturesque rock formations.
Explore the Lakeside Village of Bemus Point
Head back to Chautauqua Lake to explore the charming village of Bemus Point. With its waterfront setting, locally owned boutiques, and inviting restaurants, the village perfectly captures the laid-back feeling of a classic summer getaway.
Spend some time strolling along Main Street, popping into the local shops before heading out onto the water. One of the best ways to experience the lake is with Bemus Bay Water Toys, which offers a variety of rentals, including hydrobikes, kayaks, and pontoons. They also operate popular Tiki Boat Tours, making it easy to spend an afternoon on the water.
We opted for a mini-jet boat ride, and it was such a fun, refreshing way to experience Chautauqua Lake. Cruising across the water with the breeze on our faces while taking in views of Bemus Point from the lake gave us a completely different perspective of the village.
Dinner with a View in Bemus Point
After an afternoon exploring Bemus Point, settle in for dinner at one of the village’s waterfront restaurants.
One popular option is The Village Casino, a longtime local favorite located right at the tip of the point. With its laid-back atmosphere, outdoor seating, and beautiful views of Chautauqua Lake, it’s an ideal spot to enjoy dinner while watching the boats come and go.
I chose Ellicottville Brewing on Chautauqua, and it did not disappoint. Their spacious lakeside patio was the perfect place to unwind after a full day of exploring. I ordered the Nashville Hot Chicken Sandwich paired with a crisp summer ale, and it was the perfect meal to end the day while soaking in the lake views.
Unwind by the Lake at Chautauqua Harbor Hotel
After a full day of adventure, head back to Chautauqua Harbor Hotel for a relaxing evening. Spend some time swimming in the outdoor pool, soaking in the hot tub, or simply unwinding with a drink while overlooking Chautauqua Lake. I loved listening to the live music while watching the sunset over the lake; it was the perfect way to end the day.
Day 3: Jamestown & Chautauqua Institution
For the final day of your Chautauqua County getaway, head to Jamestown before spending the afternoon exploring the iconic Chautauqua Institution. Start the day by visiting two of the city’s lesser-known cultural gems, the Robert H. Jackson Center and the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, before enjoying lunch and an afternoon wandering the historic lakeside community.
If you’re interested in comedy or television history, you could easily swap these museums for the National Comedy Center and the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum. Both are exceptional attractions and deserve several hours to experience fully, making them excellent alternatives depending on your interests.
Start Your Morning at Crown Street Roasting Company
Located in downtown Jamestown, Crown Street Roasting Company is the perfect place to start your day. As a self-proclaimed coffee lover, I couldn’t resist stopping in for a handcrafted latte and a light breakfast before heading to the Robert H. Jackson Center.
The café has a bright, airy interior with a clean, modern design, while outdoor tables along the tree-lined street make it an inviting spot to linger on a summer morning. I ordered an iced latte with a slice of coffee cake, and it was the perfect light breakfast before a day of exploring.
Discover the Robert H. Jackson Center
The Robert H. Jackson Center was one of the most surprising stops of my trip. Tucked away in downtown Jamestown, this historic house museum explores the life and legacy of former Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson, with a particular focus on his pivotal role as Chief U.S. Prosecutor during the Nuremberg Trials.
At the center, you’ll learn about Jackson’s remarkable career and the Center’s ongoing mission to advance justice, the rule of law, and civic education.
Just as impressive as the exhibits is the setting itself. Housed inside the beautifully restored Alonzo Kent Mansion, the museum features stunning ornate woodwork and period details. My jaw dropped the moment I stepped inside! It was worth visiting for the architecture alone.
Explore the Roger Tory Peterson Institute
Nature lovers, or anyone who appreciates thoughtfully curated museums and beautiful design, should make time for the Roger Tory Peterson Institute. This museum and nature center celebrates the works of Roger Tory Peterson, who pioneered the modern field guide.
Throughout the Institute, you’ll find Peterson’s original illustrations displayed alongside rotating exhibitions from other nature-inspired artists. During my visit, The Botanical Art of Roger Tory Peterson and Heeyoung Kim was on display, and the intricate botanical illustrations immediately caught my eye.
Before you leave, be sure to pick up a trail map and spend some time exploring the Institute’s peaceful nature trails. It’s the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the landscapes that inspired Peterson’s work. And you might even see some birds along the way.
Enjoy Lunch at the Historic Athenaeum Hotel
Next, head to the historic Athenaeum Hotel, located within the grounds of Chautauqua Institution. After purchasing your gate pass, make your way to this iconic Victorian hotel overlooking Chautauqua Lake.
Welcoming guests since 1881, the Athenaeum Hotel is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Chautauqua, best known for its grand 200-foot wraparound porch.
One of the best ways to experience the hotel is with lunch at Heirloom Restaurant. Grab a table on the porch, where gentle lake breezes and views of Chautauqua Lake create an atmosphere that feels as though you’ve stepped back in time. I ordered the Strawberry & Peach Burrata Salad with a side of Truffle Parmesan Fries, and every bite was delicious. It was one of my favorite meals of the trip and the perfect way to slow down before spending the afternoon exploring Chautauqua Institution.
Wander Through Chautauqua Institution
Spend the rest of the afternoon soaking in the charm and creative energy of Chautauqua Institution, one of the most unique communities in New York. Each summer, this historic lakeside community welcomes visitors from around the world for nine weeks of lectures, performances, classes, and cultural programming centered around the arts, education, religion, and recreation.
Simply wandering the tree-lined streets, I could immediately understand why so many people return year after year. During my visit, I stumbled upon the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra rehearsing for a free concert in the Amphitheater and overheard a lecture taking place at the Hall of Philosophy. Everywhere I turned, there was a sense of curiosity, creativity, and lifelong learning that made the community feel unlike anywhere else I’ve visited.
You don’t need to attend a lecture or performance to appreciate the magic of Chautauqua Institution. I didn’t, and I still left completely captivated. Instead, spend your afternoon strolling through the peaceful streets, admiring the beautifully preserved Victorian cottages, browsing the local bookstore and gift shop, or simply relaxing by the shores of Chautauqua Lake.
End Your Trip with Ice Cream in Mayville
No summer getaway is complete without an ice cream stop, and Boxcar Barney’s in Mayville is the perfect place to end your trip. Located just a short drive from Chautauqua Institution, this local favorite serves some of the best homemade ice cream in the county.
I couldn’t resist ordering a scoop of the decadent Brownie Batter ice cream, and it was the perfect sweet treat before the drive home. Before leaving, I walked across the street for one last look at Chautauqua Lake, where the historic Chautauqua Belle sat docked along the waterfront. It was the perfect way to cap off an unforgettable three days in Chautauqua County.

I’m always searching for nearby destinations that feel like a true escape, and Chautauqua County was exactly that. From dining on lakeside patios and exploring charming waterfront towns to relaxing at one of the most beautiful hotels in New York, every day offered something different while still inviting me to slow down and savor the moment.
