Castle Combe is perhaps one of the most recognizable villages in the Cotswolds. Chances are, if you’ve researched the region, you’ve come across the iconic photos of Castle Combe Bridge.

Castle Combe was actually one of my first introductions to the Cotswolds. I remember seeing and saving photos of this picturesque village long before I even considered booking a trip to this part of England.

After spending a morning meandering through Castle Combe, taking in the idyllic streets and honey-colored Cotswolds cottages, I could see why it’s often referred to as the prettiest village in England.

Castle Combe is, simply put, so picturesque!

However, it’s also quite a bit smaller than some of the other popular Cotswolds villages. And it’s a little out of the way from the other villages you might be planning to visit on your Cotswolds itinerary.

So, the question is, is Castle Combe worth visiting?

Is Castle Combe Worth Visiting?

Absolutely. 100%. Yes, Castle Combe is worth visiting! In fact, Castle Combe was one of my favorites of the five villages I visited in the Cotswolds.

While other villages offer more things to do, shopping, and dining options, Castle Combe is so picturesque that you feel like you’re walking through a village plucked straight from the pages of a storybook.

That said, is Castle Combe small? Absolutely. You could walk through the entire village in about 15 minutes if you wanted to. But it’s so charming that you could easily spend much longer meandering through its picturesque streets.

Is Castle Combe a bit out of the way? Again, yes. The other villages I visited (Broadway, Bibury, Stow-on-the-Wold, and Bourton-on-the-Water) were generally about 20–30 minutes apart by car. Castle Combe, on the other hand, was about an hour’s drive from our next stop in Bibury.

However, Castle Combe was well worth the extra drive! It is truly one of the most beautiful villages I have ever visited. Every inch of this tiny Cotswolds village felt like it belonged on a postcard.

We actually visited Castle Combe on our England road trip, stopping between Bath and the other Cotswolds villages. This made it a perfect addition to our itinerary without having to go too far out of our way.

Why Visit Castle Combe?

Castle Combe Is One of the Prettiest Villages in the Cotswolds

Castle Combe is frequently cited as not only one of the prettiest villages in the Cotswolds, but one of the prettiest villages in all of England.

This distinction isn’t simply a clever marketing ploy. Castle Combe truly is so picturesque! Every corner of this tiny village looks like a postcard.

Castle Combe may be small, but I found myself stopping every few feet to admire the charming cottages and snap photos of the picturesque streets winding through the village.

The Iconic Castle Combe Bridge

If you’re anything like me, you likely have photos and short-form videos of the iconic Castle Combe Bridge saved across just about every social media app.

And I will say, this famous Cotswolds view is just as beautiful in person! With the stone bridge, peaceful Bybrook River, and honey-colored cottages in the background, it’s easy to see why this is one of the most photographed spots in Castle Combe.

And yes, it makes for a fantastic spot to snap your next Instagram photos!

Castle Combe Feels Like Stepping Back in Time

More so than any of the villages that I personally visited in the Cotswolds, Castle Combe truly feels like stepping back in time.

Nothing about Castle Combe feels particularly modernized. From the honey-colored stone cottages lining its narrow streets to the historic Market Cross and St. Andrew’s Church, the entire village feels like a time capsule.

It’s easy to forget that you’re not actually in some fairy-tale world until a car whizzes by down the center of the village.

You Don’t Need a Full Day to Visit Castle Combe

I know Castle Combe’s small size might seem like a deterrent, but it’s actually one of the village’s biggest advantages!

Castle Combe isn’t a village you need to carve out an entire day to explore. While you can certainly spend longer lingering over afternoon tea or enjoying a traditional pub meal, you really only need one to two hours to explore Castle Combe.

This makes Castle Combe a great destination to combine with other stops on a day trip or road trip.

One popular day trip combination is Castle Combe and Lacock, another picturesque Wiltshire village that has served as a filming location for the Harry Potter movies.

We easily incorporated Castle Combe into our England road trip. We departed Bath early, spent the morning in Castle Combe, explored Bibury in the afternoon, and enjoyed dinner in Broadway, all without feeling rushed!

The Manor House Is One of the Most Beautiful Hotels in the Cotswolds

The Manor House is such an iconic English country house hotel that it is well worth visiting Castle Combe just to stay at this stunning estate.

Set within beautiful grounds just outside the heart of the village, The Manor House offers the opportunity to experience Castle Combe beyond a quick day trip.

While I didn’t have the chance to visit The Manor House during my time in Castle Combe, it’s somewhere I’d absolutely love to return to for an overnight stay.

Potential Downsides of Visiting Castle Combe

Castle Combe Is a Bit Out of the Way

While I absolutely loved Castle Combe, its location might make it difficult to fit into every Cotswolds itinerary.

Castle Combe is located in the southern Cotswolds, quite a distance from other popular villages like Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water, and Bibury.

If you’re staying in the northern Cotswolds and only have a day or two to explore, visiting Castle Combe could mean spending a significant amount of your limited time driving.

I do think Castle Combe is worth the detour, time permitting. However, there are so many beautiful villages in the Cotswolds that you may opt to skip Castle Combe to save on driving time.
