Chautauqua County feels like a local secret. Situated in the southwesternmost corner of New York State, it is one of Western New York’s most diverse destinations, yet it’s one I rarely hear discussed in the broader travel sphere.
If you’ve ever driven around Buffalo, you’ve surely seen those iconic CTQ bumper stickers on cars. It’s clear that Chautauqua County has long been a beloved summertime getaway for Western New Yorkers.
I’ve visited Chautauqua County many times over the years, and from my first few visits, I totally got the appeal.
I’ve listened to live music in Bemus Point from the comfort of my friend’s boat, laughed my way through the National Comedy Center, and sipped the iconic Pumking at Southern Tier Brewing Company.
While these visits gave me glimpses of what makes this county so special, it wasn’t until I spent three days properly immersed in tourist mode that I realized just how much Chautauqua County has to offer.
And I must say, Chautauqua County is so worth the visit!
Is Chautauqua County Worth Visiting?
Yes! Chautauqua County is absolutely worth visiting. What surprised me most during my latest trip was just how diverse the county is. This isn’t simply a destination for spending a summer weekend on Chautauqua Lake.
You can sip wine overlooking vineyards near Lake Erie, spend the day boating on Chautauqua Lake, explore incredible natural attractions, experience world-class comedy and arts, wander charming small towns, and relax along two completely different waterfronts.
For a summer getaway, I couldn’t recommend Chautauqua County enough! There is so much to do.
That said, I know Chautauqua is practically in my backyard. The heart of Chautauqua County is less than a 90-minute drive from Buffalo, so I know my opinion is a bit skewed. This is an incredibly easy local getaway for me.
But I’m also the kind of traveler who loves seeking out off-the-beaten-path destinations wherever I travel, and Chautauqua County is exactly that. If I were visiting from farther away, I would still consider it well worth adding to my itinerary.
Chautauqua County makes a great addition to a New York road trip, a relaxing destination to pair with a trip to Niagara Falls and Buffalo, or the perfect spot for a laid-back weekend getaway.
Why Visit Chautauqua County?
Experience Two Incredible Lakes
With two distinct lakes, there is no shortage of lakeside fun in Chautauqua County. From the shores of Lake Erie to Chautauqua Lake, you can experience two completely different waterfronts within one trip.
Along Lake Erie, you can spend the day at the beach, explore the waterfront in Dunkirk, sip wine throughout Lake Erie Wine Country, and stick around for an incredible sunset over the water.
Then there is Chautauqua Lake, which offers that quintessential summer lake getaway. Spend your days boating, exploring lakeside communities like Bemus Point, dining by the water, or simply slowing down and enjoying the views.
Being able to experience both lakes is easily one of my favorite things about visiting Chautauqua County.
Explore Lake Erie Wine Country
You might not immediately think of Western New York when planning a wine getaway, but Chautauqua County sits within Lake Erie Wine Country.
Vineyards stretch across the landscape near the Lake Erie shoreline, creating an incredibly scenic area to explore. The region is especially known for its Concord grapes, but you’ll find plenty of other wines to try along the way.
During my trip, I visited Liberty Vineyards, where I sampled local wines and learned more about the region’s winemaking and grape-growing history.
Even if you aren’t planning an entire trip around wine, spending an afternoon visiting a winery or two is a great addition to a Chautauqua County getaway.
Discover One-of-a-Kind Attractions
Chautauqua County has some attractions you simply won’t find anywhere else.
In Jamestown, the National Comedy Center celebrates the art of comedy through interactive exhibits and an incredibly fun museum experience. Nearby, the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum celebrates the lives and careers of the iconic comedy duo.
Then there is Chautauqua Institution, a historic lakeside community centered around arts, education, music, and culture. Perhaps one of the most unique places in Chautauqua County is Lily Dale, often described as a village of mediums.
These unique attractions give Chautauqua an identity beyond being simply another lake destination.
Enjoy the Charming Lakeside Towns
Part of the fun of visiting Chautauqua County is exploring the small towns and communities scattered throughout the region.
Bemus Point is one of my favorites, especially in summer, when the village comes alive along Chautauqua Lake. You can browse the shops, grab something to eat with a view of the water, spend time on the lake, and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.
Fredonia offers a completely different experience with its historic downtown and charming village streets (though a lot quieter when college isn’t in session), while Dunkirk gives you easy access to the Lake Erie waterfront.
Rather than having one central tourist area, Chautauqua County feels like a collection of little destinations waiting to be explored.
Get Outdoors and Explore
If you love mixing sightseeing with outdoor adventure, there are plenty of opportunities to get outside in Chautauqua County.
Panama Rocks Scenic Park is easily one of the most memorable. Massive rock formations, narrow passageways, towering trees, and moss-covered boulders make exploring the park feel like stepping into another world.
Beyond Panama Rocks, you can spend time boating, kayaking, hiking, relaxing on the beach, or simply enjoying the scenery around the county’s lakes and countryside.
The variety is wide enough that you can make your trip as adventurous or relaxing as you’d like.
Stay at a Beautiful Lakefront Hotel
A beautiful hotel can completely elevate a getaway, and Chautauqua Harbor Hotel does exactly that. Situated directly along the shores of Chautauqua Lake in Celoron, this hotel feels like a destination in itself.
The sprawling lakefront grounds are the real highlight. You can relax by the outdoor pool, grab a drink and sit by the water, gather around the fire pits in the evening, or simply take in the views of Chautauqua Lake.
Staying at Chautauqua Harbor Hotel really adds to that quintessential summer lake getaway feeling. Rather than just a place to sleep at the end of the day, the hotel becomes part of the Chautauqua County experience.

Slow Down and Enjoy the Summer
One of the best reasons to visit Chautauqua County is how easy it is to slow down here.
A day can be as simple as sipping wine overlooking the vineyards, wandering through a lakeside town, getting out on the water, having dinner with a lake view, and watching the sunset.
There are plenty of things to see and do, but Chautauqua County never feels like a destination where you need to rush from one attraction to the next.
For me, that’s a huge part of its appeal. Chautauqua County gives you plenty to explore while still feeling like a true summer getaway.
