Mirador San Miguel Alto: Best Sunset Spot In Granada

There are endless viewpoints in Granada. Almost anywhere you go in the city, you will find a fantastic view. Some of my favorites are the views of the Alhambra. While the view from Mirador San Nicolas is the most famous, the view from Mirador San Miguel Alto is perhaps the most beautiful view of the Alhambra. As its name suggests, this viewpoint is located above the Albaicin and is the highest viewpoint in Granada. Due to its vantage point, this Mirador offers a unparalleled views of the Alhambra, the Albaicin below and the snow capped Sierra Nevadas in the distance.

From the Albaicin neighborhood, Mirador San Miguel Alto is roughly a twenty minute walk. Yet, keep in mind, this is a steep walk. Be prepared to walk up a winding, inclined road. Once you reach the base of the viewpoint, you will need to continue up a uphill dirt path. While the walk is not easy, the view is worth it. You will be rewarded with sweeping views of Granada. Alternatively, you can take a bus or taxi near Mirador San Miguel Alto. However, you will still need to walk up the steep dirt path to the church.

The best time to visit Mirador San Miguel Alto is for sunset. This viewpoint is one of the best sunset spots in Granada. While this viewpoint is in an isolated area, plenty of people come here to watch the sunset meaning that you don’t need to be overly worried about your safety. There will be groups of people sitting around the church, waiting for the sun to set.  Watching the sunset from this viewpoint is enchanting. The sun casts a beautiful warm hue over the Alhambra. Once the sun officially sets, you can see the city and Alhambra lit up.

Tips For Visiting Mirador San Miguel Alto

Give Yourself Time

It takes approximately twenty minutes to walk to this viewpoint from the Albaicin. However, as this walk is uphill, you will want to leave a cushion in time for breaks. Schedule enough extra time to ensure that you make it to the viewpoint before sunset.

Wear Walking Shoes

Not only is the walk to Mirador San Miguel Alto extremely steep, the viewpoint itself has dirt walking paths. This means comfortable walking shoes are a must!

Bring a Bottle of Wine

This viewpoint is far away from shops, meaning that you will want to bring your own drinks and snacks. I suggest grabbing a bottle of wine and some snacks to enjoy while you watch the sunset. Consider packing an insulated travel wine tote bag to easily carry your wine and snacks to epic viewpoints like this.
