In the dead of winter, when temperatures dip below freezing, a spectacular natural phenomenon can appear at Letchworth State Park. While visiting Letchworth in winter already means snow-covered cliffs and frozen waterfalls, those who arrive at just the right moment may be rewarded with something even more extraordinary: the Letchworth Ice Volcano.
In particularly cold years, this frozen formation can grow to between 20 and 50 feet tall, making it one of the most incredible winter sights in New York.

Where Is the Ice Volcano Located
The Ice Volcano is located outside the Glen Iris Inn at Letchworth State Park. Directly in front of the inn sits the Glen Iris Fountain, which is responsible for the formation of the ice volcano during extended cold spells.
When the volcano is present, you’ll likely see a crowd gathered around, as it’s one of the park’s most popular winter sights. The fountain and ice volcano are visible as you approach the inn, so you truly can’t miss it.
You may be tempted to pull over along the side of the road to view the Ice Volcano, but be sure to keep driving to the parking lot for the Glen Iris Inn instead. The Glen Iris Inn is closed in winter, so you can park in any available spot.
When to See the Ice Volcano
The best time to see the Letchworth Ice Volcano is after a prolonged stretch of cold weather. The more consecutive days temperatures remain below freezing, the taller the ice volcano can grow. Typically, the best chance of seeing it occurs during the coldest part of winter, often in February.
By mid to late winter, there is usually enough sustained cold for the ice to form into an impressive structure. That said, seeing the ice volcano is never guaranteed. Conditions change quickly, and its size can vary from year to year.

How is the Letchworth Ice Volcano Formed
Outside the Glen Iris Inn is a gravity-fed fountain that flows year-round. During prolonged stretches of sub-freezing temperatures, the constant spray from the Glen Iris Fountain begins to freeze as it lands, allowing ice to slowly build up around the base.
During winter, when temperatures consistently remain below freezing, the Ice Volcano begins to form. Once the pond beneath the Glen Iris Fountain freezes over, the fountain’s continuous spray starts to freeze as it lands, allowing ice to slowly build up around the base.
As long as cold temperatures persist, ice layers continue to accumulate. The more consecutive freezing days there are, the taller the ice volcano grows. In particularly cold winters, the formation has been known to reach heights of up to 50 feet.
The volcano can only grow as high as the water from the Glen Iris Fountain can spray. Once the ice reaches that height, it begins to fill in from the top, creating the massive frozen cone shape visitors see at its peak.
Tips for Visiting the Ice Volcano
- Check conditions before visiting: The ice volcano isn’t guaranteed to form every winter. Check recent social media tags for current conditions.
- Visit after prolonged cold weather: The ice volcano forms after several consecutive days of freezing temperatures. The longer the cold stretch, the taller the formation.
- Park in the Glen Iris Inn lot: Avoid stopping along the road. Continue driving to the Glen Iris Inn parking area, which remains accessible in winter even though the inn is closed.
