The Niagara Falls foliage intensifies the park’s beauty, making an already epic visit to these waterfalls even more enticing.
I’ve visited Niagara Falls countless times and in every season, and I must say there is something truly special about it in the Fall.
There’s something about the crisp Autumn air, the crunch of leaves underfoot, and the brilliant array of foliage set as a backdrop to the waterfalls that make it such a perfect leaf-peeping destination.

Before You Go
🏨 Book the Holiday Inn Niagara Falls State Park Entry, a comfortable, family-friendly hotel steps away from the State Park!
🚗 Getting around Niagara Falls: You can get to all these spots by walking, however, I would suggest having a car to visit nearby leaf-peeping destinations, including seeing the foliage in Letchworth! You can book a rental car here.
Seeing the Niagara Falls in the Fall
Fall is one of the best times to visit Niagara Falls State Park. Follow these tips for visiting this New York State Park during peak Fall foliage.
Parking Fee in Fall
A $10 entrance fee at Niagara Falls State Park is collected on weekdays (Monday-Friday). If you are visiting on the weekends, parking is $15.
However, parking at Niagara Falls State Park is included if you have the Empire Pass.
Parking at the Niagara Gorge (Devil’s Hole State Park and Whirlpool State Park) is always free.
When to See Niagara Falls State Park Fall Foliage?
The Niagara region of New York typically reaches peak Fall foliage from mid to late October. I Love NY posts a weekly Fall Foliage Report starting in September. The Fall Foliage report is a great tool to help plan your Fall visit to Niagara Falls.
Additionally, check the location tag for Niagara Falls State Park on Instagram to visualize what the leaves look like during your visit.
Where to See Niagara Falls Fall Foliage
While the entirety of Niagara Falls State Park is bursting with vibrant foliage come Fall, there are some spots that you don’t want to miss. Don’t miss these top spots for Fall foliage in Niagara Falls.
This list includes the spots within the park to see foliage (spoiler alert: it’s essentially the entire park) and some other places around Niagara Falls.
Three Sisters Island
Many people skip Three Sisters Island when visiting Niagara Falls. If you’re on a time crunch, it can be skipped to make time for the three major waterfalls of Niagara Falls.
However, Three Sisters Island is serene and idyllic, especially in the fall. It is well worth a stop and is the perfect place to start your perfect Fall day in Niagara Falls.
This area is noted for its small waterfalls and footbridges. There are plenty of trees across the island for fall colors and views of the Niagara Falls skyline.
Terrapin Point
Terrapin Point is the viewing platform overlooking Horseshoe Falls. This area is often coated in cool mist from the waterfall.
Due to the sheer amount of mist, Terrapin Point is perhaps not the best spot to photograph the Fall foliage at Niagara Falls. However, it is still quick and beautiful and should not be missed on a visit. You can still see some really beautiful foliage across the river.
Luna Island
Luna Island is situated between Bridal Veil Falls and American Falls. While you get the view above the Falls, this spot doesn’t get quite as misty as Terrapin Point, meaning that it makes for a much better foliage viewing area.
This small island is such an idyllic spot because it is covered in vegetation, which adds a lot of beautiful fall color as the leaves start changing.
Goat Island Walkway
My favorite spot to see Fall colors in Niagara Falls State Park is along the Goat Island Walkway.
As you leave Luna Island, follow the lower pathway along the Goat Island Walkway. This walkway leads to the Pedestrian Bridge, following the rippling river past various small islands.
Rapids and plenty of trees make it one of the most beautiful spots to see the Fall Foliage in Niagara Falls.
Pedestrian Bridge
As you walk along the Pedestrian Bridge from Goat Island to Prospect Point, peek through the fencing. You’ll be rewarded with incredible views of the rapids and stunning foliage.
This is such a picture-perfect spot. However, many people don’t stop to appreciate the scenery since they focus on getting to the next lookout point.
Prospect Point
Prospect Point offers sweeping views of all three waterfalls from the USA side of Niagara Falls. From this spot, you can view the waterfalls and see foliage lining both the USA and Canadian sides of the Niagara River.
Aside from taking in Niagara Falls with gorgeous Fall colors from this spot, there is an expansive lawn adjacent to Prospect Point dotted by various trees.
Niagara Gorge
One of the most scenic spots to see the Fall foliage in Niagara is the Niagara Gorge. My favorite spot to check out the gorge is Whirlpool State Park.
At Whirlpool State Park, you get impressive views of the Niagara Gorge and have options to personalize your experience. If you only have time for a quick stop, a platform overlooks the whirlpool and the rapids.
You can take a scenic walk along the rim trail, follow a tree-lined path, or even hike to the base of the gorge via the Whirlpool Gorge Trail.
Niagara Scenic Parkway
The Niagara Scenic Parkway is a 16.4-mile parkway that follows the Niagara River past Niagara Falls to Lake Ontario.
This scenic drive in Niagara Falls is even more stunning in the Fall. You can see water and vibrant trees along most of this parkway. There are plenty of spots to pull over along the Niagara Scenic Parkway, making it a fantastic Fall activity.
Niagara Falls State Park in Fall: Wrap-Up
If you’re considering visiting Niagara Falls in the Fall, do not hesitate! Fall is such a rewarding time of year to visit Niagara Falls State Park.
With fewer crowds, nice weather, and stunning foliage, it is shocking that more people don’t travel to Niagara Falls in October. After seeing the fall foliage, you would be remiss not to visit in the fall.
