Often dubbed the “prettiest village in England”, Castle Combe is truly one of the most idyllic places in the country.

With its postcard-perfect view from the iconic Castle Combe Bridge, the peaceful Bybrook River ambling through the village, and honey-colored cottages lining its historic streets, it is easy to see why this Cotswolds village is so beloved.

If you’re like me, seeing photos of Castle Combe might be your first introduction to the Cotswolds region. And it’s a wonderful place to start.

While the appeal of visiting this tiny Cotswolds village is slowing down and simply marveling at its charm, there is actually quite a bit to do. From historic landmarks to picturesque streets, these are the best things to do in Castle Combe.

Best Things to Do in Castle Combe

So, what exactly is there to do in this picture-perfect little village? While you could easily spend your entire visit to Castle Combe marveling at its postcard-perfect scenery, there are a few things you simply can’t miss.

Take in the Iconic Castle Combe Bridge View

If there is one thing you simply cannot miss while in this Cotswolds village, it is taking in the view from the Castle Combe Bridge.

The stone bridge crossing the Bybrook River into the village looks like something straight out of a fairy tale. With the river, honey-colored cottages, and historic buildings in the background, this iconic view is one of the biggest draws of Castle Combe.

Truly, I think I saved a photo of the Castle Combe Bridge and promptly started planning a trip to the Cotswolds. It’s that beautiful!

This is also one of the best spots to take photos in Castle Combe. Just keep in mind that cars do pass over the stone bridge, so be mindful of traffic while taking photos.

Take a Walk Through Castle Combe

One of the best ways to appreciate Castle Combe is to wander through the village, soak up the atmosphere, and take in the beautiful surroundings.

Castle Combe is so small that you could walk through the entirety of the village in approximately ten minutes. However, it is so picturesque, with Cotswold stone cottages, the iconic stone bridge, and the looming St. Andrew’s Church, that you will be absolutely besotted by the views.

The details are what make Castle Combe so alluring. I took countless photos of the stone cottages, charming doors, and beautiful vines adorning the historic buildings.

One view you simply cannot miss is Water Lane from the bridge. This charming private road is lined with some of the prettiest stone cottages in Castle Combe, creating another quintessential Cotswolds view. While you can’t wander down Water Lane itself, you can get a beautiful view looking down the lane from the Castle Combe Bridge.

See the Historic Market Cross

Located in the heart of the village is the historic Market Cross, which dates back to the 14th century when Castle Combe was an important center for the local wool and cloth trade.

The Market Cross once marked the site of the village’s weekly market and today remains one of Castle Combe’s most recognizable historic landmarks. Be sure to stop here while wandering through the village and admire the surrounding Cotswold stone buildings.

Castle Combe had a thriving wool industry during the Middle Ages, and the Market Cross was once at the center of this local trade. It was so interesting to learn a bit more about the history behind this picturesque village while visiting the Market Cross.

Visit St. Andrew’s Church

Unexpectedly, one of my favorite stops in Castle Combe was St. Andrew’s Church. Situated next to the Market Cross, this historic church looms above the village and adds to Castle Combe’s storybook atmosphere.

While you can see St. Andrew’s Church from the village center, be sure to take some time to explore it up close. I especially loved wandering through the eerily beautiful churchyard, where old gravestones and raised stone tombs surround the church.

Be sure to step inside the church as well. The historic interior is worth taking a few minutes to explore and gives you another glimpse into Castle Combe’s centuries of history.

Stroll Along West Street

Tucked away through an iron gate near the Market Cross is West Street, a picturesque lane lined with quintessential Cotswolds cottages.

With colorful doors and petite yet lush gardens adorning the honey-colored stone houses, this is one of the prettiest streets to explore in Castle Combe.

Keep in mind that West Street is residential, so be respectful when exploring, especially when it comes to noise and photography.

You can also access West Street from the churchyard behind St. Andrew’s Church.

See the Dower House from Doctor Dolittle

Castle Combe is so picturesque that it is no surprise that it has had its fair share of cinematic appearances. One of the most iconic was in the 1967 musical Doctor Dolittle.

The village was transformed into the fictional English village of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh for the film, with several locations around Castle Combe appearing on screen. One spot to look out for is the Dower House, which was featured in the movie.

While in Castle Combe, I actually photographed the Dower House without even realizing the film connection. It’s such a beautiful home, and unique to the other buildings in the village, that it caught my eye.

Stop for Afternoon Tea

We didn’t linger in Castle Combe long enough for a bite to eat, as we had plans to visit another village that day on our Cotswolds itinerary.

However, if you want to linger a little longer and soak up Castle Combe’s atmosphere, consider stopping at The Old Stables, a local coffee and tea shop situated just off the main street. It’s a cozy spot to enjoy coffee, tea, cakes, and sandwiches during your visit.

If you’re feeling a bit more indulgent, head to The Manor House for a classic afternoon tea served in the hotel’s lounge.

Have a Drink or Meal at a Traditional Pub

If a pub is more your style, you’ll be pleased to discover that this tiny village has two traditional English pubs: The Castle Inn and The White Hart.

Stop in for a pint if you’re looking for a midday or evening refreshment, or stay a little longer for a hearty English meal. A cozy pub stop is the perfect addition to a leisurely visit to Castle Combe.

Visit The Manor House

One of the most beautiful spots in the Cotswolds, hands down, is The Manor House, a luxury country house hotel tucked away in Castle Combe.

Located just down West Street from the village center, this striking ivy-covered property is well worth checking out during your visit. Even if you’re not staying overnight, consider stopping by for a drink at the bar or indulging in afternoon tea.

I’ve seen countless social media posts featuring The Manor House and had the location saved on my Google Maps for years…and somehow, I forgot to visit while I was in Castle Combe! I was so blown away by the beauty of the village that checking out this spot completely slipped my mind.

I guess that means I have to come back and stay here?
