If you’re seeking out a unique bookstore experience in London, look no further than Word on the Water, the city’s iconic floating bookshop. Situated along a peaceful stretch of the Regent’s Canal, this bookstore is equal parts quirky and charming.
Word on the Water is one of the most unique bookstores in all of London and is a must-visit for any book lover or those seeking hidden gems in London.
This bookstore is not your typical brick-and-mortar shop; instead, Word on the Water is nestled in a 1920s Dutch barge.
Word on the Water – The London Bookbarge
Word on the Water is easily one of the most unique bookstores I have ever visited. Seeing this barge bobbing along the canal, I knew I was about to experience something special.
As you approach Word on the Water, it appears as if it is a typical boat docked along Regent’s Canal. Yet, as you get closer, you will see that this barge is brimming with books.
Step aboard and you’ll immediately feel the charm that sets Word on the Water apart.
The interior is small but full of character. Books are stacked high on wooden shelves, a wood-burning stove keeps things cozy on a crisp autumn or winter day, and you can see the ripple of water from the windows behind the bookshelves.
The barge is filled with both new and used books, spanning a wide range of genres, including contemporary fiction, poetry, and travel writing. It’s the kind of place where you’ll lose track of time, flipping through paperbacks.
You can feel the sway of the boat as it gently rocks with the current of the canal, making you never forget that you are on a floating bookstore in London.
Outside, the boat’s deck is often lined with even more books and flower pots, adding to its whimsical appeal. If you’re lucky, you might find live music drifting over the canal or impromptu poetry readings taking place right on deck.
